After upgrading to Ubuntu Maverick, the Aircrack suite stopped working.

After setting airodump to a channel (like usual):

airodump –channel X

It still displayed its status as:

fixed channel mon0: -1

Some forum users advised to use:

airodump –channel X,X

But this didn’t work. For the record, I’m using a Thinkpad X60, with the iwl3945 driver. lshw output:

*-network
description: Wireless interface
product: PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection
vendor: Intel Corporation
physical id: 0
logical name: eth1
version: 02
width: 32 bits
clock: 33MHz
capabilities: bus_master cap_list ethernet physical wireless

Luckily, there is an easy to follow thread on the forums which fixes the problem for a similar card. This solution also worked with my 3945ABG.

Here are the commands:

wget http://wireless.kernel.org/download/compat-wireless-2.6/compat-wireless-2010-10-16.tar.bz2
tar -jxf compat-wireless-2010-10-16.tar.bz2
cd compat-wireless-2010-10-16
wget http://patches.aircrack-ng.org/mac80211.compat08082009.wl_frag+ack_v1.patch
patch -p1 < mac80211.compat08082009.wl_frag+ack_v1.patch
wget http://patches.aircrack-ng.org/channel-negative-one-maxim.patch
patch ./net/wireless/chan.c channel-negative-one-maxim.patch
gedit scripts/update-initramfs
#*** FIND LINE 13: KLIB=/lib/modules/2.6.31-wl/build
#*** REPLACE WITH: KLIB=/lib/modules/$(uname -r)/build
make
sudo make install
sudo make unload
sudo modprobe iwl3945

Alternatively you can also use sudo reboot instead of sudo modprobe if you’re unsure which driver module you need to load.

aircrack should work fine again now. Note that kernel updates might overwrite the module again (and, hopefully, fix the bug at the same time).

Today we will see how to block ping responses in Linux.
This trick has no real interest unless you want to hide a little the presence of your machine on a network.
We still keep in mind that the command nmap is able to bypass this trick (eg nmap-sP 127.0.0.1).

To disable response to ping, open a terminal as root and run the following command:

echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/icmp_echo_ignore_all

And to go back:

echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/icmp_echo_ignore_all

Warning, these two commands perform the change dynamically and at the next boot, this change is lost.
To make a permanent change, you must edit your /etc/sysctl.conf as follows:

echo “net.ipv4.icmp_echo_ignore_all = 1″ >> /etc/sysctl.conf
sysctl -p /etc/sysctl.conf

We have seen with the release of Fedora 15, the new system is systemd services startup, which will replace sysvinit and Upstart on most Linux distributions. Here are some tips, based on the command systemd-analyze, which can analyze the startup time of your OS.

We start with the time option, which displays the total time you start your system:

$ systemd -analyze time
Startup finished in 6385ms (kernel) + 3228ms (initrd) + 49335ms (userspace) = 58949ms

Here, we start in 59 seconds. It is possible to go further with the option blame, which displays the startup time by service:

$ systemd-analyze blame
12673ms cups.service
11788ms dkms_autoinstaller.service
5264ms network.service
5156ms ip6tables.service
5045ms avahi-daemon.service
…

The analysis result is very interesting, because we know immediately what services that slow start and we can disable them if they do not serve us.
The last option uses the tip pad and provides a graphical start-up time of each service:

$ systemd-analyze plot > plot.svg
$ eog plot.svg

Then “Settings Access Point Wi-Fi”: choose a router name and password

Then activate the “access point Wi-Fi laptop”

Turn the 3G network as you normally do

Open a browser on your Android and test the Internet connection is working properly

On your computer

Connect to Wi-Fi, whose name is one that you choose

Please note, in some telephone operators (Orange, Vodafone, DigiMobil…), a connection filtering was implemented to prevent you from using your 3G connection with your desktop computer. So when you open an Internet browser, one page offers you to subscribe to a paid subscription.

To circumvent this, there is a technique: changes the User Agent of your browser.

With less than Firefox 4.0, just:

return address about: config

accept the warning message

enter “useragent” in the search filter

general.useragent.extra.firefox change the key by putting a zero value for example

For Firefox 4.0 and higher, just:

return address about: config

accept the warning message

Right click in the white area → New → String of characters

Then added the key general.useragent.override with the value that is desired

The final version of Gnome 3.0 was released a few days ago. This was much awaited as it brings many changes in organization of work. Indeed, with Gnome 3.0, everything revolves around the notion of activity rather than virtual desktops. The user starts well in one or more activities (eg Internet, music, office …) and can then switch between them, thanks to the Windows key on the keyboard for example.

Gnome 3.0 developers are hopping to get a head start on the competition by offering users a modern working environment and efficient.

More generally, here are the main changes in Gnome 3.0:

a new desktop interface.

a new interface for the file manager.

messaging is completely integrated into the desktop. The instant messages appear as pop-ups at the bottom of the screen. You may reply directly.

a notification system that records alerts until the user reads them.

a new way to create workspaces is available (see video).

all features are accessible from the keyboard.

icons can’t be added to desktop.

windows cannot be resized easely.

If you want to test Gnome 3.0 now, you can use one of two LiveCDs available on the official website (version OpenSUSE or Fedora). ISOs do not work very well with VirtualBox (graphics driver problem).

You can also install Gnome 3.0 on Ubuntu 11.04, using the following command lines:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install gnome3-session

Warning, this PPA is experimental and is not compatible with Unity.
