After more than a year of development, Firefox 4 is now available. So the opportunity to make a quick turn on all the new proposed. If you want to download and install this version without further waiting, I recommend reading this article.
The main new features for users
Without a doubt one of the biggest news, it is the new user interface. Many things have gone and the tabs can be found at the top of the window. The goal here is to win a maximum of place:
Note the presence of an orange button that brings together all the menus. This button is currently visible on Windows Vista and Seven versions of Firefox. For others, it is possible to get something similar like this: right click in the top menu bar, then choose to disable the display of the bar.
The Apps Tab: This feature introduced by Google Chrome tab can pin a sustainable manner so that it appears permanently, even after closing the browser. This is useful for sites you visit regularly (Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, redCode Net.Work), because it avoids having to re-open the page automatically.
The arrival of Panorama in Firefox 4 lets you better manage your tabs. This is a system that includes as a theme or project.
Firefox Sync is now available by default. This module synchronizes certain data from your profile (bookmarks, preferences, passwords …) to the Mozilla servers. This allows to find the same environment on different computers or mobile phones. More details are available here.
Popup windows adopt a new look and no longer block other tabs running:
A new module manager has also been introduced. In addition to a redesigned interface, new options were added like the ability to automatically update plugins or extensions. It will be noted in passing that we no longer need to restart your browser after installing one of these elements.
The new rendering engine side
Other features equally interesting:
Support video format WebM
better support for CSS 3 and HTML 5
hardware acceleration through the video card (not enabled by default)
support for multi-touch Windows 7 only
HSTS implementation of a new protocol that allows websites to require a secure connection HTTPS
improved management of OpenType fonts
operation of SVG images as standard
To conclude, I would tend to say that Firefox 4 does not innovate much, especially user interface side. Most changes were simply copied from the Google Chrome browser (positioning of tabs at the top, apps tab …) or Opera (orange button). This version seems to catch up on the competition. For the rest, there is not much to say, this browser is still stable and pleasant to use. I will continue to recommend it to my friends.
